Just for the fun of it:
Editor’s Note: It is always fun to read what others are saying about shows worth participating in, and more certainly from our Canadian friend, Cam Hutchins.
Cam is a professional photographer, auto writer, and truly a “car nut”. You’ll find more about Cam and his activities at Car Nut
From Cam’s latest epistle, with permission of course:
“The big Langley (BC) show happens this weekend with a great massive car show on Saturday and a swap meet Sunday. I have been going to this show for more than 10 years. In 2002, I shot photos of Alyn Edwards’ GT 500 KR and did a montage portrait of it. One of my first, and now I am doing a montage portrait of his wife’s 1960 Corvette that she has owned since the early 70’s. Edwards has just had it restored and it will be unveiled at the Vancouver SuperCar show at Van Dusen Gardens this weekend. ( See Featured Events)
The Newton Boys are up to their hijinks at Rusty’s Pub in Cloverdale this Sunday with a Dragster firing up that will shake the ground and fill the air with the sweet sound of a multi 1000 horsepower engine firing up!!! Across town is the Cat and Fiddle Show and the HOG “Harley Owners Group” presents their 14th “HOG WILD” About Reading – Motorcycle ride for literacy 5‑stop scrabble ride. The ride is a reading take off of the “Poker” run and is open to all vehicles…so grab your favourite ride and tour the lower mainland for a good cause.
When you go to car shows this weekend, I want you to think of the amazing opportunity we have in BC to see some amazing cars that in many cases with enough love and money have transcended being just cars and are now works of art.
I spoke with a fellow at the 55–56-57 Chevy Club annual picnic at Aldergrove Park and he told me that he went on the Chevy II cruise with his Chevy 2 and used 1 & 1/2 tanks of gas. He then opened up the hood to show me the massive 496 cu. in. engine with a serious thirst for fuel to make huge amounts of horsepower. But it does get 68 miles per tank…that is serious commitment to owning a cool car.
Other major expenses by car owners to offer the public amazing vehicles to look at. At last weekend’s Crescent Beach Concours d Elegance, David Cohen brought his 1933 Alfa Romeo 6C-1750 Gran Sport that was originally shown at the 1933 Paris Salon and more recently shown at Pebble Beach Concours d Elegance. After the car was shown with a Figoni body at the Paris Salon it was rebodied with a light weight racing body for the 1935 LeMans race.
After spending most of it’s life in South Africa, it was restored by RX Autoworks in North Vancouver and then was shown at the 2012 Concorso D’Eleganza Villa D’Este in Lake Como. It won the top 3 awards at the show and only 2 other cars have ever won all 3 in the last 80 years. Pebble Beach was next and it won its class and was runner up for the Best of show.
Other great marques included Simplex Crane, Pierce, Talbot, Lagonda, Cord, Chalmers and celebrating 50 years of Porsche 911 with a special Rally Racing 911 from the Porsche Museum. Not all great cars have to be from the big luxurious brands: the row of custom American cars and the row of perfectly restored Muscle cars were as big a draw as any old Bentley.
One car that was “perfect” was Bob Brody’s Chevrolet Z24…not the familiar cavalier but the massive 1967 Imapala Based SS 427. The SS 427 was shown at the Super Car show in Chicago last year and was judge to be just shy of 1000 points of perfection. It lost points for an imperfect grille badge and a couple of unpainted bolts under the car. Just over 1400 of these Convertibles were made and only a few of those were 4‑speeds like this one. Sold only in the states it was a special version of the Impala SS but curiously was not badged Imapala anywhere. When Brody found the car in the Midwest, it was probably too far gone to be restored and the original drive train had been sold to a hot rodder in New York decades before.
Against all odds, the original drive train was still owned by the hot rodder who had not gotten around to installing it so he was willing to sell this amazing 427 powerplant. Finding many “New Old Stock” original parts to complete the restoration took a lot of time, but the finished result is stunning. The car is painted its original burgundy colour and dazzles in the sun but where fired up you know that on the road or track is where it really shines.
Probably the best part of Crescent Beach Concours show was that this amazing SS 427 was going to finally get to see the road after a year as a pampered show car. Imagine owning a special car that you restore to perfection, but cannot drive it because it is more important to have it seen first. That is the ultimate testament of dedication to the car hobby and those of us that love cars have to be thankful for all those that take the time to give us something over the top to feast our eyes on!!! ”
