As it celebrates its 11th anniversary, the Kirkland Concours d’Elegance begins it’s second year on Sept 8 at the LeMay – America’s Car Museum, in Tacoma. Featuring a nine-acre campus – with a four-story museum as the centerpiece – LeMay-ACM, in the shadow of Mt. Rainier 30 minutes south of Seattle, is one of the America’s largest auto museums. This family-oriented event is regarded as one of the premier concours events in the country.
Feature classes and awards have been determined for the 2013 U.S. Bank Kirkland Concours d’Elegance, which will take place on the Haub Family Field adjacent to the musem, and include Mercedes-Benz, with a number of the German automaker’s legendary models slated to be on display.
Special classes will highlight Ferrari, the Porsche 911, five decades of Lincoln, Woodies, Classic Car Club of America vehicles and a motorcycle class consisting of Pre-War American bikes.
One of the key elements of the Kirkland Concours is the leadership and participation of the Classic Car Club of America’s Pacific Northwest Region. Many of its members participate with their award winning cars, as judges and volunteers.
“Both as individuals and as a club, the members have been pleased to support the Kirkland Concours d’Elegance since its inception. There is a huge difference between a car show and a Concours”, stated Brian Rohrback, PNR CCCA Director and avid collector. ” We participate in this great event to bring enjoyment to those who exhibit cars and those who come to appreciate the art and beauty. This showcase is a source of great pride for our members and it creates worldwide attention for the quality of the automobiles on display.”
Many of the participants of the Kirkland Concours have been judges, in leadership and have had their cars in the legendary Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance for many years.
The event’s “Kirkland Concours Award” will be renamed to honor Phil Smart Sr., the former title sponsor of the Kirkland Concours in its early years. Smart, a longtime luxury automotive dealer, volunteer and philanthropist in the state of Washington, passed away earlier this year at 93.
Over its first 10 years of existence, the Concours d’Elegance donated approximately 1.5 million dollars to Seattle Children’s and Evergreen Hospitals.
The Concours will also include a Collector’s Class featuring the vehicles of John Goodman and a Special Display Class with a variety of important automobiles.
The Kirkland Concours will run on Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The LeMay Museum — ACM, located adjacent to the Tacoma Dome, is a separate entity from the LeMay Family Collection at LeMay Marymount facility which houses the main family collection in south Tacoma.
